2020

Rather than Fall ’19, Diversity Day is scheduled for early Spring ‘20

2018

October 5, 10:00 am - 3:30 pm: 24 MARC students from North Carolina A&T University, University of Maryland Baltimore County, and Hampton University participated in Diversity Day.  Organized by Assistant Dean Janet Cross. 
10 - 10:45 am: Welcome and Introductions (Janet Cross, Amy Bouton).
11 am - 12 pm: Students divided up into two groups for a one-on-one faculty interview (BTP mentors Roger Abounader, Mete Civelek, Gary Owens, Sarah Ewald, Bill Petri, Gordon Laurie, Jeff Saucerman and Tajie Harris volunteered) and a UVa facilities tour (Flow Cytometry core Facility), or a lab hands-on experience. BTP trainee Maria Ali offered a lab experience.
12 - 1:15 pm: Lunch with panel discussion with six graduate students (Janet Arras [MSTP (Microbiology)], Anthony Fernandez-Casteneda [Neuroscience], Myron Gilbert [SRIP alum; Cancer (Microbiology)], Xavier Horton [SRIP alum; BTP (Cell Biology)], Nadine Michel [MSTP (Biochemistry)], Kris Rawls [BTP (BME)])
1:30 - 2:30 pm: Two student groups switch to one-on-one faculty interview and a UVa facilities tour (Flow Cytometry core Facility), or a Microbiology lab hands-on experience.
2:45 - 3:30 pm: Training Grant Roundtable discussion, including participation of the BTP with director Gordon Laurie.
3:30 pm; Closing remarks and final questions.

2017

11 am - 12 pm: Students divided up into two groups for a one-on-one faculty interview (BTP mentors Mazhar Adli, Kevin Janes, Roger Abounader, Eli Zunder, Jeff Saucerman, Andreas Gahlmann, David Kashatus and Tajie Harris met with students) and a UVa facilities tour (Flow Cytometry core Facility), or a lab hands-on experience. BTP trainees Faith Karanja, Maria Ali and Adrienne Williams offered lab experiences.

11 am - 12 pm: Students divided up into two groups for a one-on-one faculty interview (BTP mentors Chris Deppmann, David Kashatus, Gordon Laurie, Jeff Saucerman, Sylvia Blemker and Tajie Harris met with students) and a UVa facilities tour, or a lab hands-on experience. BTP trainees Alexandra Harris and Faith Karanja offered lab experiences.

October 2, 10:00 am - 3:30 pm: ~22 North Carolina A&T University and University of Maryland Baltimore County MARC students.  Organized by Shayn Peirce-Cottler, Young Hahn and Mary Hall of the BTP, with help from Keisha John (UVa Director of Diversity), Janet Cross and Amy Bouton.  Program includes: (i) Welcome from Shayn Peirce-Cottler and Young Hahn, and introduction from Amy Bouton.  (ii) Two lab-based small group show and tell and hand’s on experiences with graduate students.  (iii) Two one-on-one interviews with faculty mentors. (iii) Lunch welcome from Greg Townsend (Associate Dean for Diversity & Medical Education) followed by Q&A session with a panel of URM postdocs and graduate students.  (iii) Keisha John moderated round table discussions with training grant directors, followed by a brief presentation of UVa’s Summer Research Internship Program.  (iv) Closing by Janet Cross.  Download pdf.

Organized by Amy Bouton.  Program includes: (i) Welcome and introduction from Amy Bouton.  (ii) Two lab-based small group show and tell and hand’s on experiences with graduate students:  What is it like to be a graduate student.  (iii) Discussion lunch with graduate students.  (iv) Round table discussions with training grant directors.  (iv) Information on UVa’s Summer Research Internship Program.
